This was probably due to the available combo pack which included a personal viewing monitor and headphone jack as well as a DC power pack.
Oddly enough this model actually outsold the PlayStation 2 during it release. The PS one played the same exact games as the original PlayStation but offered a new GUI as well as more compact design. In may of 2000 Sony released a new redesigned PlayStation the PS one. The final revision only seen a few changes such as moving the parallel port to the bottom and reducing the size of the motherboard.
Model SCPH-9001 was the final model of the original PlayStation. Model SCPH-7501 was the fifth model and similar to the 5501 this model only made further cost saving improvements. 
Further cost saving improvements were made inside the unit.
Model SCPH-7001 the fourth and by far the most improved model made Dual-Shock standard as well as the induction of sound scope. Model SCPH-5501 the third revision only seen some internal changes to reduce overall manufacturing costs and made no noticeable changes for the user. However the A/V jacks were removed from this version requiring the user to have the multi A/V cable. These improvements fixed the video skipping often found in the first model. Model SCPH-5001 was the second model released seen a few performance upgrades to the cd rom drive including reinforcing the laser guide, adding a digital servo and simplifying the power structure. They would also suffer from heat issues later in life causing many of them to have a short lived life. This model often times suffered video playback issues such as missing audio and or skipping pictures. This model contained built in A/V jacks and did not require the multi A/V out cables that other later models did. Model SCPH 1001 was the original model released in 1995. While these changes addressed previous hardware issues they also created their own issues by removing needed I/O options. 
Over the next 5 years the original Sony PlayStation seen several different models each with their own little changes.
